Injured Walker, Great Staple Tor

January 08, 2022

Callout #2

At 12:16  the Police called Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team (Tavistock) to rescue a female walker with a broken ankle on Great Staple Tor.  The team was deployed with Land Rover ’63’, and a Sarloc text sent to the casualty party to double-check their grid reference.

The Air Ambulance was also tasked but the stretcher party continued as the helicopter was unlikely to be able to land very close to the casualty-site, if at all in the conditions of strong winds and driving rain.  Once the helimed paramedics had treated the casualty the team packaged her up in a vacuum mattress and casualty-bag and transferred her by stretcher to the helicopter.

The remaining members of the party, a Ten Tors team in training with their adult leaders, were walked back to the RV and their waiting minibus.  They thanked us for our speedy response, surprised to see the first team members coming over the hill only 30 minutes after calling 999.  Everyone was off the hill by 1400, at which point the rain stopped!
